• WIP: Sucker Punch

I’ve been meaning for a while to start posting writing Works In Progress (WIPs) here. I’ve never done much poetry, but I was experimenting with it a little over the weekend and this piece is the result. Hope you enjoy.

    Sucker Punch

they call it a sucker punch because it caught you off guard

    you let yourself get suckered

    into dropping your guard

    and trusting

    as if caring isn’t brave

    but foolish

as if the smart way to go through life

    is guarded

as if people doing stupid, selfish things

    is surprising

as if the ideal state of the human heart

    is hardened

    calloused

    impenetrable

    sitting there

with the wind knocked out of you

    nauseated

    it’s hard not to feel

    suckered

    surprised

    foolish.

    catch your breath

    you’ll be fine.

    you offered peace

    trust

    grace

    forgiveness

a chance for them to choose

    to be better

    different

    surprising

and standing over you with their knuckles raw

you wonder who is the sucker?

    the one who knows

she’s tough enough to take a low blow

    without turning hard

    brittle

    and cold

or the one with the aching hands

    and the bitter heart

who thinks betraying with a kiss

    is more desirable than

    a kiss?

Beautiful and very poignant! You’re Inspiring me to get back into poetry.

I like it. In this life you have to take hits to be something you want to be. If it means you have to be the sucker, then you have to also be able to take the emotional punch of betrayal. I read one of your articles from 2008, about how you have to be able to use criticism to become a better writer. As someone with avoidant personality disorder on the road to recovery, I learned recently that not many people are actually out to pull a sucker punch on you. One of the best things I’ve found that helps with social anxiety is writing poetry and then putting a first draft on somewhere where your going to cop a lot of flak.
So far I’ve even enjoyed some of the worst heart wrenching feelings.
