Going to take a little of my own advice, and write today a little bit from my own personal story, only rather than fictionalize it, I’m going to be straight up and own that I’m not talking about “a friend.”
(Which, by the way, does anyone really think they’re fooling anyone when they ask for advice or share something personal on behalf of a “friend”? Why do we need that flimsy domino mask when asking for help for our problems anyway? Just wondering. If you have any interesting theories, feel free to post them in the comments.)
I’m considering getting some personal coaching. Right now, I’m at a clear crossroads in a lot of areas of my life, and I think that the choices I make in the next year or two will have pretty long-lasting effects. It’s already fairly plain for me to see that the choices I made over the last four or five years had a deep impact on my life and the life of my family. So I want to move forward mindfully, and I think getting some coaching might be a good way to get some objective perspective on things.
There are two routes I could go (and truthfully, it’s possible I could take both). One route is that our church has a professional counseling pastor on staff. It just so happens that our membership interview was with this particular pastor, and after hearing some of our background as a couple and as a family, he recommended that we follow up to discuss some things in greater depth. I am pretty sure that we’re going to do this as a couple. I am less sure of the wisdom of throwing my mostly-unrelated individual stuff into the marital stuff mix.
The other route is, I just discovered that a particular enneagram expert and coach whose work I really admire is available for phone coaching, and at a rate that is pretty affordable, comparatively speaking. He is a Christian (former priest) and also does spiritual direction, which is also something I’ve been interested in. I’ve read several articles that he’s written, as well as a book, and both were really beneficial and helpful.
So I present this issue to the world wide web and my reader friends. Have any of you gotten or looked into personal or professional development coaching? Any experiences with spiritual direction? What are your thoughts?
Thanks in advance. 🙂
