Moving Around and Setting Goals

If everything works out as planned, you should have had no trouble finding this new post on my new webhost. However, since DNS management is not my strong suit, maybe not. I’ll keep working on it till I’m confident I haven’t left anyone behind.

I moved the content, theme and ads for That Darn Kat to my new web host, and pointed the domain here. This blog will continue to serve as my “brain dump.” As often as my brain runneth over, I’ll most likely always need one. will be more focused on my writing, and that’s where all the flash fiction, publishing announcements, scribblings about the writing craft and publishing industry, etc. will go from now on. Basically, the stuffs I’ve been posting under “Story & Craft.” This will continue to be all kinds of random.

Speaking of the writing stuffs, I’ve declared a single goal for 2013. But it’s a doozy.

I’m going to produce and publish an eBook every month.

Some of these will be short stories or collections of flash fiction, but every third book will be at least novella length, according to SFWA standards (between 17,500 and 40,000 words). I’ll be publishing them on Smashwords, Kobo, and probably Amazon (assuming I can figure all that out).

I know that sounds crazy. It’s probably not as crazy as it sounds. Sometimes you have to do something a little bit crazy to find your sanity. Over the last year, I’ve gotten completely turned around trying to learn everything I possibly can about the writing craft and the publishing industry (which is possibly even more of a moving target than my day job, if you can believe it.) In the end, I’ve realized that the one thing I really, really need to focus on this year is starting and finishing stories.  So that’s what I’m going to do. At the end of the year, I will have started and finished a dozen stories, four of significant length, and put them out into the world, judgment and criticism (worthy and otherwise) be damned.

The first book will be a free download of “Big Teeth,” a short story that is a prequel of sorts for Bitter Cold, the novella that will be coming out from Echelon Press as a part of the Once Upon a Clockwork Tale anthology of steampunk fairy tales in February. “Big Teeth” is a steampunk retelling of “Little Red Riding Hood.” As you’d expect, there’s a big bad wolf. There’s a girl in a red hood and her granny. There’s a woodsman. Things get bad, then very bad, then worse, but it all gets sorted out in the end.

There’s also burglary, alchemy, a mechanical monster, and a fairly large explosion.

You won’t need to read “Big Teeth” to enjoy Bitter Cold, but if you do enjoy one it’s a safe bet you’ll like the other.  Based on the outline and the word count so far, I expect it to come in around 5000-7500 words, or just barely under a novelette. It’ll make a nice penny dreadful, or dime novel if you’re American, and since I’m not charging a penny or a dime, you can consider it quite the bargain.

WISH ME LUCK! – That Darn Kat

Wow, Kat! That’s a heckuva challenge you’ve made for yourself, but I know it’ll be an enjoyable one. Looking forward to reading the eBooks!

I’m a nervous wreck, Alison! But after all the domain and hosting crazyness the last couple weeks, I feel less intimidated by the eBooks. 🙂
