Happy Bosses' Day

I bet you didn’t know today was National Bosses’ Day, did ya?

These days, and especially in the blogoverse, it’s not fashionable to say you like not being your own boss.

But I like not being my own boss.

I can say that pretty conclusively, having been my own boss and run my own company for a short while.

Yes, there are some Horrible Bosses out there, and working for those guys can ruin a perfectly good vocational situation. But a good boss, within a good company, enables you focus on the stuff you rock, while spending minimal time doing things that are pointless or things at which you suck.

Having a boss and being an amazing team contributor is not tantamount to indentured servitude, no matter what some people will tell you. Sometimes, freedom is being free from the inevitable yak shaving and nonsense that goes along with running a business.

So Happy Bosses Day to you all. May you find a boss that lets you shine, and invests in you like an asset, as opposed to using you up like a resource.

Even if that boss is you. 😉

Yak Shaving: Any seemingly pointless activity which is actually necessary to solve a problem which solves a problem which, several levels of recursion later, solves the real problem you’re working on.

As Nick said in A THOUSAND CLOWNS, “You want to be your own boss but the trouble with that is you don’t pay yourself anything.” And I’m like, Yeah. ~sigh~
